Saturday 1st June saw the first of the matches in the NCR summer league at Blackheath. There was a spectacular turnout which was helped by some glorious sunny weather.
NCR has attracted a lot of new recruits, some with rugby experience but new to ‘tag’ and others for whom the sport is a whole new experience. The new recruits were supported by quite a number of ‘old hands’. The afternoon began with a game played at walking pace, to embed the basic rules with those entirely new to the game.
This was followed by two league games both of which were extremely competitive and high on energy. Matches tended to go the way of the teams where the core of experienced players used their expertise to organise their less experienced team mates and play a team game. In this situation the girls better supported their male counterparts on break-always and were more successful in racking up the 2 pointers, which was telling in terms of the final scores.
As is now customary for games on the Heath, the competitors retired to the Princess of Wales pub for a post match drink and a bit of banter. At this rate we will probably qualify as regulars by the time the league reaches a conclusion.
