What does it mean when teams bring in a ‘Ringer’?

The phrase “bringing in the ringer” is most commonly used when referring to a tag competition / league game where one team inserts a participant when they are short a player. However this particular ringer could be chosen based on specific talent, who has an advantage over the opposing team, that the outcome is considered assured.

This advantage may be the result of legitimate ability, or it may be the result of illegal or unethical means. In other words, a “ringer” may be able to dictate the outcome of a competition because they are simply better than all other competitors, or because they have broken the rules for their own benefit. So, the use of a “ringer” may be characterised–depending on the situation–as the justifiable strategic use of a superior talent, or it may be seen as an unfair tactic that achieves advantage through deceit or actions that fall outside of the accepted rules.

In any case, more often than not there are genuine reasons to have ringers when a tag team struggles to get at least a full line up for that fixture.(superior substitute ringers are another story 🙂

REMINDER RINGER RULES FOR BLACKHEATH TAG RUGBY WEEKLY(7-a-side)

Four original players(paid) must be on the pitch at all times at least. The team is allowed to have max of two female ringers and two male ringers. Breaking this rule means an immediate forfeit, unless special arrangements are made to the contrary agreed with both captains and referee. In some instances teams may or may not know who is a ringer, it’s up to both teams to bring it to the attention of the ref or organiser at the time of the offense. Once game is over, ref finalises the score. This score cannot be reversed unless exceptional circumstances. At kick off, it’s decided if the game is a forfeit or NOT between the captains and the ref. In the case of both teams not having enough original players(less than 4) then it goes to a score on the board or friendly, so they can decide to make a challenge for points or settle with a 0-0 result. This is only decided by both team representatives (preferably the captain).
